Quick answer

Dental veneers are thin shells bonded to the front of teeth to change their colour, shape or alignment. In Australia in 2026 porcelain veneers typically cost $1,400–$3,000 per tooth and composite veneers $400–$1,200 per tooth, based on published Melbourne practice data and the ADA 2022 fee survey (NSW porcelain from $1,950). Porcelain lasts longer; composite is cheaper and repairable. A registered dentist should assess suitability first.

What dental veneers are

A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain or composite resin bonded to the front surface of a tooth. It covers discolouration that whitening cannot fix, closes small gaps, squares off chipped or worn edges and can make mildly crooked front teeth look straight. Veneers are cosmetic dentistry: they change how teeth look, not how healthy they are, so any decay or gum disease needs treating first.

Most people have veneers on the six to ten upper front teeth that show when they smile. One or two veneers are common for a single chipped or discoloured tooth. A full set of ten or more is sometimes called a smile makeover, and that is where costs climb into five figures.

Porcelain veneers versus composite veneers

The choice between porcelain and composite is the biggest decision, and it drives cost, longevity and the number of visits.

Porcelain veneers

Made in a dental laboratory from a scan or impression, then bonded on at a second visit. Porcelain mimics enamel’s translucency well, resists stain and holds its finish. A 2021 systematic review covering about 6,500 veneers found a 10-year survival rate of 95.5 per cent, and well-cared-for porcelain veneers commonly last 15 years or more. The downsides are cost, the need to remove a thin layer of enamel in most cases, and the fact that a cracked porcelain veneer is usually replaced rather than repaired.

Composite veneers

The dentist sculpts composite resin directly onto the tooth in one visit and polishes it to shape. Little or no enamel is removed, so the procedure is often reversible, and chips can be patched in the chair. Composite is cheaper up front but picks up stain over time and generally lasts five to seven years before it needs refreshing. Over fifteen years, two or three rounds of composite can cost as much as one set of porcelain.

Which is right for you

Porcelain suits people who want the longest-lasting, most stain-resistant result and are happy with the up-front cost. Composite suits younger patients, single-tooth fixes, tighter budgets and anyone who wants a reversible first step. Composite bonding for small chips is covered in our dental bonding cost guide.

How much veneers cost in Australia

No consumer-facing summary of the ADA fee survey publishes a veneer average, but Finder’s guide cites the ADA 2022 survey for New South Wales at upwards of $1,950 per porcelain veneer and $800 per composite veneer, and says many practices quote up to $2,500 for porcelain. Smile Solutions in Melbourne, which publishes its fees, charges $2,650 per porcelain veneer and from $950 per composite veneer, and its survey of the Melbourne market puts porcelain at $1,400–$3,000 and composite at $400–$1,200 per tooth.

The Victorian TAC fee schedule for 2025–26 gives a useful floor: $1,543 for an indirect (porcelain) veneer under item 556 and $426 for a direct (composite) veneer under item 526 at a general dentist. Cosmetic practices in CBD locations commonly charge well above those benchmarks.

What is usually extra

Health funds and veneers

Veneers are classed as major dental or excluded as cosmetic, depending on the fund. Where they are covered, Finder notes a mid-range extras policy might pay around $600–$800 a year toward veneer item numbers, which is a fraction of a multi-tooth case. Canstar notes most extras policies do not include aesthetic veneers unless medically necessary. Check your policy, ask the practice to quote through your fund, and do not assume a payout. Medicare does not cover veneers.

Veneers in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth

Dental veneers Melbourne

Melbourne has the clearest published pricing. The Smile Solutions market breakdown puts porcelain veneers at $1,800–$2,500 per tooth in the CBD and eastern suburbs (South Yarra, Toorak, Brighton, Camberwell), $1,200–$1,800 in the northern and western suburbs, and $1,200–$1,700 in the south-east, with mid-range practices around $1,700–$1,900. Composite runs $400–$1,200. Package pricing for six to ten veneers is common, with published examples of $15,990 for six and $23,990 for ten.

Porcelain veneers Sydney

The ADA 2022 survey figure Finder cites for NSW, upwards of $1,950 per porcelain veneer, is the best published benchmark for Sydney. Sydney CBD and eastern-suburb cosmetic practices commonly quote $2,000–$3,000 per tooth, and the Sydney practices we checked did not publish a fee, so expect to pay for a consultation before you see a number.

Porcelain veneers Perth

We could not find a published Perth veneer price from a practice or a comparison site. The ADA survey consistently places Western Australian fees among the lowest in the country, so a reasonable expectation is the lower half of the national $1,400–$3,000 porcelain range. Confirm with two or three quotes. Our Perth dentists guide covers how to shortlist.

Overseas

Porcelain veneers in Thailand, Turkey or Bali are advertised at $135–$500 per tooth. The saving is real; the trade-offs are follow-up, warranty and who fixes a problem a year later. Our dental work overseas guide sets out the questions to ask.

Veneers before and after: what the process involves

  1. Consultation and planning. The dentist examines your teeth, gums and bite, takes photos and X-rays, and discusses what you want to change. Many practices create a digital mock-up or a trial smile in temporary composite so you can see the shape before committing.
  2. Preparation. For porcelain, around half a millimetre of enamel is usually removed from the front of each tooth so the veneer sits flush. Impressions or a scan go to the lab, and temporary veneers are fitted. For composite, preparation is minimal and the veneer is built the same day.
  3. Fitting. One to three weeks later the porcelain veneers are tried in, adjusted for shade and fit, then bonded with resin cement and cured. The bite is checked and the edges polished.
  4. Review. A follow-up a week or two later checks the gums and bite. Expect mild sensitivity to cold for a few weeks.

Realistic before-and-after outcomes: brighter, more even front teeth with closed gaps and repaired edges. Veneers do not correct significant crowding or bite problems; for those, see braces or Invisalign. Be cautious of galleries showing dramatic changes without the patient’s starting point or how many teeth were treated.

Who veneers suit, and who they do not

Veneers suit healthy teeth with cosmetic problems: internal staining that will not bleach, chips, small gaps, mild misalignment and worn edges. They are less suitable, or need other treatment first, if you have:

Veneers are not reversible once enamel has been removed, and they will need replacing eventually. A good cosmetic dentist will tell you if whitening and bonding would get you most of the way for a fraction of the cost.

Looking after veneers

Veneers are cleaned like natural teeth: brush twice a day with a non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste, floss daily, and keep up six-monthly check-ups and cleans. Avoid using your front teeth to open packets, bite nails or crunch ice, since that is how most porcelain chips happen. If you grind at night, a custom night guard (see our guide to night guards for teeth grinding) is cheap insurance for a five-figure smile. Composite veneers benefit from a professional polish every year or two to lift surface stain.

Budget for replacement. Porcelain veneers commonly last 10 to 15 years or more and composite 5 to 7, after which they are replaced at close to the original cost. A practice that offers a written warranty on debonding or fracture in the first few years is giving you useful information about its confidence in the work.

Choosing a dentist for veneers

Any dentist placing veneers in Australia must be registered with AHPRA; check the Dental Board public register. Cosmetic dentistry is not a registered specialty, so ‘cosmetic dentist’ describes a general dentist’s focus rather than a recognised qualification. Prosthodontists are registered specialists in restoring and replacing teeth and do place veneers, usually at higher fees.

Ask to see the dentist’s own before-and-after cases with similar starting points to yours, ask which laboratory makes their porcelain and where, ask for the itemised quote with item numbers, and ask what warranty or remake policy applies if a veneer chips or debonds. Then get a second opinion. A multi-tooth veneer case is a five-figure, long-term decision, and the quality of the planning matters more than the brand of porcelain.

Common questions

How much do veneers cost per tooth in Australia?

Indicative 2026 prices are $1,400–$3,000 per porcelain veneer and $400–$1,200 per composite veneer, based on published Melbourne market data. The ADA 2022 fee survey figure cited for NSW is upwards of $1,950 for porcelain and $800 for composite. Inner-city cosmetic practices often charge $2,500 or more per porcelain veneer. Always ask for an itemised quote.

Are porcelain veneers worth it compared with composite?

Porcelain costs two to three times more up front but typically lasts 10–15 years or longer with a 95.5 per cent 10-year survival rate in a 2021 review, and resists stain. Composite lasts around five to seven years and can discolour, but is cheaper, usually reversible and repairable. Over fifteen years the total cost can be similar; the right choice depends on budget, age and how permanent you want the change.

How much are veneers in Melbourne?

Published Melbourne prices run $1,400–$3,000 per porcelain veneer, with CBD and eastern-suburb practices at $1,800–$2,500 and northern, western and south-eastern suburbs at $1,200–$1,800. Composite veneers run $400–$1,200. Smile Solutions publishes $2,650 per porcelain veneer, from $950 for composite, and packages of $15,990 for six and $23,990 for ten veneers.

Does a health fund cover veneers?

Sometimes, under major dental on mid or top extras tiers, and often not at all when the fund treats veneers as cosmetic. Where cover exists, Finder notes a mid-range policy might pay roughly $600–$800 a year toward veneer item numbers, which is small against a multi-tooth case. Check your policy and ask the practice to confirm with your fund. Medicare does not cover veneers.

Do veneers damage your natural teeth?

Porcelain veneers usually require removing about half a millimetre of enamel, which is permanent, so the tooth will always need a veneer or crown afterwards. Composite veneers remove little or no enamel and are often reversible. Neither damages a healthy tooth when done well, but veneers over untreated decay or gum disease, or on heavy grinders without a night guard, can fail early. A registered dentist should assess this first.

Can veneers fix crooked teeth?

Veneers can make mildly rotated or uneven front teeth look straighter by reshaping their visible surface, which is sometimes called instant orthodontics. They cannot fix significant crowding, spacing or bite problems, and veneering badly aligned teeth may require removing too much enamel. For more than mild misalignment, braces or clear aligners first is usually the better and cheaper long-term path.
