Quick answer

Invisalign is a system of removable clear aligners that straighten teeth in a planned sequence. In Australia in 2026 it typically costs $3,500–$9,500 at a general dentist, with specialist orthodontists quoting up to about $15,000. Most treatments take 6–24 months, with aligners worn 20–22 hours a day and changed every one to two weeks.

Invisalign is the best-known brand of clear aligner. Made by Align Technology, it has been used since 1997 and is now offered by thousands of Australian dentists and orthodontists. The appeal is simple: the aligners are close to invisible, you take them out to eat and brush, and treatment is planned digitally before the first aligner is made.

This hub explains how Invisalign works, what the different packages mean, what it costs in Australia in 2026, who it does and does not suit, and how to choose a provider. For detailed prices, see our Invisalign cost guide and the city pages linked below.

How does Invisalign work?

Invisalign moves teeth with a sequence of custom-made plastic trays. Each tray is shaped slightly differently from the last, so wearing them in order nudges your teeth along a planned path. The trays are made from Align’s SmartTrack material, which the company says gives more predictable tooth movement than earlier plastics.

Step by step

  1. Consultation. A dentist or orthodontist examines your teeth, gums and bite and decides whether aligners can achieve what you want. Many practices offer this visit free or credit it against treatment.
  2. Digital scan. Most providers use an iTero intra-oral scanner instead of putty impressions. The scan takes a few minutes and produces a 3D model.
  3. ClinCheck plan. The provider maps every tooth movement in Align’s planning software. You see a simulation of the end result before committing. This is also when the package (Express, Lite, Moderate or Comprehensive) is chosen.
  4. Attachments and IPR. Small tooth-coloured bumps bonded to some teeth give the aligner grip. Some plans also involve polishing a fraction of a millimetre of enamel between teeth (interproximal reduction) to make room.
  5. Wearing the aligners. You wear each set 20–22 hours a day, removing them to eat, drink anything other than water and clean your teeth. Sets are changed every one to two weeks as directed. Aligner chewies help seat each new tray.
  6. Reviews. Check-ups every 6–8 weeks, sometimes supplemented with photo monitoring through the Invisalign app.
  7. Refinements. If teeth have not tracked exactly to plan, a new scan and extra aligners finish the job. Comprehensive packages include these for up to 5 years.
  8. Retainers. Once treatment ends you wear a retainer, usually nightly, for life. Align’s Vivera retainers are made from the same scan technology.

Invisalign packages and what they cost

Align sells practices several packages that differ in the number of aligners and refinements included. Your provider picks the package after planning your case. The package is the single biggest driver of your fee.

Across the Australian practice price pages we checked, general dentists cluster in the $3,500–$9,500 range. Specialist orthodontists quote higher: Orthoworx in Sydney lists Comprehensive at $13,000–$15,000. Health funds treat Invisalign as orthodontics on extras cover; Finder estimates a mid-range policy returns about $600–$800 a year after a 12-month wait, and lifetime limits apply. Check your policy before you start.

Prices vary by city as well as by practitioner. We have sourced price tables for Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and the Gold Coast.

Who Invisalign suits, and who it does not

Invisalign handles mild to moderate crowding, spacing, and relapse after earlier braces very well. Modern versions with attachments and elastics can also treat many overbites, underbites and crossbites, though these are the cases where a specialist orthodontist earns their fee.

It suits adults and teenagers who will actually wear the trays. Choice describes 22 hours a day as a question of stamina, and that is fair. If you think you will leave the aligners in a drawer, braces will get a better result.

Where aligners struggle

A registered dentist or orthodontist will tell you at the consultation whether your case is suitable. If you are told aligners are not appropriate, ask about other types of braces rather than shopping for a provider who will say yes.

At-home aligners are a different product

Mail-order aligners from companies such as SmilePath and NewSmile cost roughly $1,674–$2,299 and are planned from a home impression kit with no in-person examination. The Australian Society of Orthodontists says orthodontic treatment should always be supervised by a trained specialist, and warns that unsupervised kits may show short-term results while compromising oral health. The Australian Dental Association advises against fixing your teeth with products bought online. They do not suit anyone with bite problems, significant crowding, gum disease or decay. Our clear aligners review covers the brands in detail.

What Invisalign treatment is actually like

The first week. Expect pressure and tenderness for two or three days with each new tray, and a slight lisp that fades within days. Attachments can feel rough on the lips at first.

Eating. You remove the aligners for anything other than water, then brush before putting them back. Most people find they snack less. Coffee and tea stain trays, so they are out while wearing them.

Cleaning. Rinse the trays each time they come out, brush them gently with a soft brush and no toothpaste, and soak them in a cleaning product a few times a week. Our retainer and aligner cleaner review compares options.

Appointments. Reviews are short and roughly every 6–8 weeks. Some practices give you several trays at once and monitor remotely in between.

Time off plan. Lost or cracked trays happen. Most providers tell you to move to the next tray or back to the previous one and call them. Replacements may be charged.

Invisalign for teenagers and children

Invisalign Teen is a Comprehensive-level package with wear indicators that fade with use, so parents and providers can see whether the trays are actually being worn, plus free replacement aligners for the inevitable losses. Invisalign First is designed for children aged roughly 6–10 with a mix of baby and adult teeth, used for early expansion and space management rather than final alignment; West Perth Dental Centre lists it at $4,500–$5,500. Neither is covered by the Child Dental Benefits Schedule, which excludes orthodontics. Our kids braces cost guide and braces for kids article cover the alternatives and the question of when to start.

Results, before and after, and keeping them

Published Australian guidance says most Invisalign treatments take 12–24 months, with simple cases finishing in about 6 months. The before-and-after photos practices show are real, but they are also selected. Ask to see cases like yours, and ask what percentage of the practice’s patients need refinements.

Teeth drift for life. Without a retainer, some relapse is almost certain, and that is true after braces too. Budget for retainers ($300–$800 a set if not included) and plan to wear them nightly. Our retainers guide explains the types and how long they last.

Common problems and what they mean

Finding an Invisalign provider near you

Both general dentists and specialist orthodontists can provide Invisalign. Align ranks providers by case volume (Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Blue Diamond), which tells you how many cases they do, not how well. Use it as one signal.

Common questions

How much does Invisalign cost in Australia?

Published 2026 practice prices put Invisalign at roughly $3,500–$9,500 at a general dentist, from Express (up to 7 aligners) through to Comprehensive (unlimited aligners). Specialist orthodontists in Sydney list Comprehensive at $13,000–$15,000. Prices are indicative; your fee depends on how much your teeth need to move. Our cost guide has sourced prices by package and city.

How does Invisalign work?

A dentist or orthodontist scans your teeth, plans every movement in software and orders a series of custom plastic aligners. Each tray is slightly different, so wearing them in order for 20–22 hours a day moves your teeth step by step. Small attachments bonded to teeth give the trays grip. Reviews happen every 6–8 weeks, and a retainer holds the result afterwards.

How long does Invisalign take?

Orthodontics Australia says most Invisalign treatments take 12–24 months, with some mild cases finishing in about 6 months. Express packages are designed for 3–6 months, Lite for 6–12 months and Comprehensive for 12–24 months or more. Wearing the aligners for the full 20–22 hours a day is the biggest factor you control.

Is Invisalign better than braces?

Neither is better in every case. Invisalign is removable, discreet and easier to clean around, and works well for mild to moderate crowding. Braces do not depend on wear time and handle severe rotations, vertical movements and complex bites more predictably. Costs overlap. A registered orthodontist can tell you which will reach your goal with less risk.

Can a general dentist do Invisalign, or do I need an orthodontist?

Both can. Many Australian general dentists are experienced Invisalign providers and are appropriate for mild to moderate cases. Specialist orthodontists have three extra years of university training and are the better choice for bite correction and complex movements. Check AHPRA registration either way, and never assume a dentist is a specialist unless they are registered as one.

Does Invisalign hurt?

Most people feel pressure and tenderness for two or three days after each new aligner, similar to a tightening with braces but usually milder. The edges can rub at first and attachments feel rough on the lips briefly. Aligner chewies help seat trays and ease pressure. Sharp or persistent pain is not normal, so contact your dentist or orthodontist if it occurs.
