This is general information. Only a registered dentist who has examined you can diagnose a problem and quote for treatment.

Two check-ups a year at Adelaide rates add up to roughly $380 to $660 before any extras rebate, which is where basic extras cover usually earns its keep. Fees in the eastern suburbs and the CBD tend to sit at the top of each range; northern and southern suburbs practices are often in the lower half. Corporate dental chains sometimes advertise new-patient packages around $199 for an exam, clean and X-rays, which is a reasonable benchmark when comparing.

How to choose a dentist in Adelaide

Every dentist in Australia must hold current registration with the Dental Board of Australia, and you can confirm it in under a minute on the Ahpra public register of practitioners.

  1. Search the dentist’s registered name on the Ahpra register. The profession should read “Dental practitioner” with the division “Dentist” (oral health therapists and hygienists are listed separately and work under different scopes).
  2. Check registration is current and that there are no conditions, undertakings or published disciplinary decisions.
  3. If the name does not appear, the person is not registered to practise in Australia.

Beyond registration, three practical questions sort most of the choice. Does the practice publish or readily quote its fees for a check-up and clean? Is it a preferred provider for your health fund, which usually means lower gaps on routine items? And can you get an appointment within a reasonable time, including for an emergency? A practice near home or work that answers yes to all three is a sound choice for routine care.

If you need specialist treatment, Adelaide has registered specialists in orthodontics, periodontics, endodontics, prosthodontics and oral surgery, and a general dentist will refer you. For straightening teeth, see our Adelaide orthodontists guide.

SA Dental: public dental care in Adelaide

SA Dental provides public dental care to all children and young people under 18, and to adults who live in South Australia and hold a current Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card (a Medicare card alone is not enough for adults). Children’s general care has no waiting list, and there is no out-of-pocket cost for children under 5, children eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule, or children in families with a concession or School Card. SA Dental bulk bills Medicare for eligible children under the CDBS.

Adults contribute to the cost of their care, with fees that usually rise each July, and SA Dental says there are waiting lists for almost all adult services. Your closest clinic can estimate the wait. Specialist treatment, including orthodontics, is available at the Adelaide Dental Hospital by referral from an SA Dental clinic, with limited access. Emergency care is not refused for inability to pay, and clinics do not accept cash.

The CDBS covers basic dental for eligible children up to $1,158 over two years but excludes orthodontics. See our Medicare and CDBS guide. If you are not eligible for public care, our extras cover comparison shows what routine cover typically pays; check your policy rather than assuming a rebate.

Common questions

How much is a check-up and clean in Adelaide?

Indicative 2026 fees for a private examination, scale and clean with X-rays in Adelaide are $190 to $330, close to the $233 national average check-up figure Canstar reports from the ADA fee survey. Eastern-suburbs and CBD practices tend to charge toward the top of the range. Extras cover usually rebates part of this; check your policy for the amount.

Who can use SA Dental public clinics in Adelaide?

All children and young people under 18, and adults who live in South Australia and hold a current Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card. Adult dependants aged 18 to 21 listed on the card are also eligible. A Medicare card alone does not make an adult eligible. Children's general care has no waiting list; adult services usually do.

How do I check an Adelaide dentist is registered?

Search the dentist's registered name on the Ahpra register of practitioners. A registered dentist appears as a dental practitioner in the dentist division, with current registration status and any conditions listed. If the name does not appear, the person is not registered to practise in Australia. You can call Ahpra on 1300 419 495 with questions about an entry.

Do I need a referral to see a dentist or specialist in Adelaide?

No referral is needed to see a general dentist privately. Specialists such as orthodontists and oral surgeons can also be seen directly, although many prefer a referral with recent X-rays. In the public system, specialist care at the Adelaide Dental Hospital requires a referral from an SA Dental clinic, and access is limited with waiting lists.

Does Medicare cover dental in Adelaide?

Generally no. Medicare does not cover routine adult dental care. The Child Dental Benefits Schedule pays up to $1,158 over two years for eligible children aged 0 to 17, and SA Dental bulk bills Medicare for these children. Orthodontic and cosmetic work is excluded. Adults rely on SA Dental if eligible, extras cover, or paying privately.
