What a Gold Coast dentist costs in 2026

The Gold Coast sits at the cheaper end of Australian dental pricing. Queensland had the lowest average filling fee in the country in CHOICE’s summary of the Australian Dental Association’s survey, and Cleanbill’s clinic data put Queensland’s average first visit at around $279, below the $297 national figure. Strong competition between chain practices along the M1 corridor keeps routine fees down.

The flip side is a wide spread between practices. A hygiene visit at a suburban family practice in Pacific Pines is listed at $156, while a comprehensive new-patient visit with X-rays at a Broadbeach or Main Beach practice can run well over $300. The table shows what is typical.

Public dental options on the Gold Coast

Queensland Health provides free dental care to eligible adults and their dependants. You qualify if you live in Queensland and hold a Pensioner Concession Card (Centrelink or DVA), a Health Care Card, a Commonwealth Seniors Health Card or a Queensland Seniors Card. Treatment is free; you pay only for your own transport.

On the Gold Coast the service is run by Gold Coast Health, with oral health clinics at Southport (next to Gold Coast University Hospital), Robina and Palm Beach. Contact Gold Coast Health’s oral health service to confirm eligibility, join the general waiting list or ask about emergency appointments. General waits can be long, so get on the list as soon as you are eligible.

Children aged 4 and over who have not completed Year 10, children eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) and dependants on a Centrelink concession card are seen free through school-based and community clinics. CDBS is a Medicare benefit for eligible children aged 0–17, capped over two calendar years; our CDBS guide has the current cap.

How to choose a dentist on the Gold Coast

Check registration first. Every dentist practising in Australia must be registered with the Dental Board of Australia through AHPRA. The public AHPRA register shows whether a practitioner is registered, whether they hold a specialist title and whether any conditions apply. It takes two minutes online.

Then consider the practical points that make the biggest difference on the Coast:

  • Published fees. Several Gold Coast practices publish full price lists. Where one does not, ask for the fee for a check-up and clean (ADA items 011 and 114) and X-rays (022) before you book.
  • Health fund networks. The Gold Coast has a high concentration of preferred-provider practices for Bupa, Medibank, HCF and nib, many offering gap-free check-ups. Check your policy; rebates on fillings, crowns and extractions vary.
  • Itemised written quotes. For anything beyond a clean, ask for a treatment plan with item numbers so you can compare quotes.
  • Location and hours. Practices near Southport, Robina Town Centre, Pacific Fair and Helensvale generally have extended and Saturday hours and parking.
  • Payment plans. Interest-free plans are widely offered; see our payment plan guide before starting major work.

We do not rank practices by reviews or stars, and no dentist is described as a specialist on this site unless AHPRA lists them as one.

Questions to ask a Gold Coast practice before you book

The $199 new-patient offers that dominate Gold Coast advertising are genuine, but ask what happens after the first visit: what is the standard fee for a six-monthly check-up and clean once the offer has been used? At one Pacific Pines practice the answer is $156, but at others it can be double. Also ask whether X-rays and fluoride are included or charged separately, and whether the practice is a preferred provider for your health fund so a routine visit is gap-free.

Where to look: Gold Coast suburbs and areas

  • Southport and Labrador: the largest cluster, including practices around Australia Fair and the hospital precinct; a mix of chain and independent fees.
  • Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach and Main Beach: more cosmetic-focused practices, with routine fees towards the upper end of the ranges above.
  • Robina, Varsity Lakes and Mudgeeraba: family practices and chains near Robina Town Centre; some of the most transparent published pricing on the Coast.
  • Burleigh Heads, Palm Beach and Currumbin: smaller independent practices in the southern beachside suburbs.
  • Helensvale, Pacific Pines, Oxenford and Coomera: fast-growing northern suburbs with newer practices and competitive fees.
  • Tweed Heads and Coolangatta: just over the NSW border; residents there use NSW Health’s public dental service (1800 679 336) rather than Queensland’s.

Emergency and after-hours dentists on the Gold Coast

For facial swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding or a knocked-out tooth after a serious accident, call 000 or go to the emergency department at Gold Coast University Hospital or Robina Hospital. For severe toothache or a broken tooth, most private practices hold same-day emergency slots and charge an emergency examination fee before treatment; expect a simple extraction at $187–$395 and surgical removal more.

Eligible concession-card holders can be triaged for emergency relief of pain through Gold Coast Health’s public clinics; phone first rather than turning up. Our emergency dentist guide covers what to do while you wait.

Common questions

How much is a check-up and clean on the Gold Coast?

A check-up and clean at a Gold Coast private dentist typically costs $170–$300 in 2026. Chain practices in Southport, Robina and Helensvale advertise $199 new-patient packages that include X-rays, while independent family practices list hygiene visits from about $156. Figures are indicative; ask what X-rays and fluoride add before booking.

Can I get free dental care on the Gold Coast?

Yes, if you are eligible. Queensland Health provides free dental care to Queensland residents with a Pensioner Concession Card, Health Care Card, Commonwealth Seniors Health Card or Queensland Seniors Card, and to eligible children. On the Gold Coast, care is delivered by Gold Coast Health's oral health clinics at Southport, Robina and Palm Beach.

How much does a filling cost on the Gold Coast?

Published Gold Coast practice fees for a white composite filling range from about $130 to $500 in 2026, depending on the number of tooth surfaces. The Australian Dental Association's survey, summarised by CHOICE, put Queensland's average filling at $148, the lowest of any state. See our filling cost guide for item-by-item detail.

Does Medicare cover the dentist in Queensland?

Medicare does not fund routine adult dental care anywhere in Australia. The Child Dental Benefits Schedule bulk-bills basic dental services for eligible children aged 0–17 up to a capped amount over two calendar years. Adults rely on extras cover, Queensland's public dental service or paying privately.

How do I check a Gold Coast dentist is registered?

Search the AHPRA Register of practitioners online. All dentists practising in Australia must be listed, and the register shows specialist registration and any conditions or undertakings. A practitioner who does not appear on the register is not permitted to practise.

I live in Tweed Heads. Which public dental service do I use?

Tweed Heads is in New South Wales, so residents use NSW Health's public dental service rather than Queensland Health. Call 1800 679 336 with your Medicare and concession card details. Private practices in Coolangatta and Tweed Heads serve both sides of the border and charge similar fees to the southern Gold Coast.
